Chapter Eleven

Kane’s words blew Iren’s mind. They sounded so perfect, but nothing was perfect. Well, that blow job had been perfect. Kane’s kisses were perfect. What Kane expected in a mating were perfect. And there was the problem. Iren wasn’t perfect.

He walked into the kitchen to find Master Aetius standing before the stove and stirring a pot of something that smelled delicious. Iren wanted to blurt out his confessions. Could the eagle smell his deceit? Kane’s scent was all over him.

“There are onions in the pantry.” The shifter continued to stir and watch whatever was cooking in the large pot. “I will need four cups of the onions cut into half inch cubes.”

“Yes, sir,” Iren answered.

He hurried into the pantry and found the large bag filled with onions. They were heavy and he had to swing the bag over his shoulder to haul it into the kitchen. After setting them on the cupboard, he took out a cutting board and withdrew a sharp knife from the knife stand.

Iren started peeling the onions and as always, the sharp smell stung his nose and he had to blink back the moisture overfilling his eyes. Once he had the estimated amount he needed, he wiped at his eyes with his arm and picked up the knife. The blade sank into the meat of the vegetable and Iren’s mind wandered.

He knew he should be thinking about Master Aetius’s long silky hair, but the warmth of Kane’s hand kept budging into his thoughts. For so long he’d thought Master Aetius was his mate, but could he be wrong? Was he being an airhead— like the person he didn’t want to think about— had called him? What should he do? Maybe he would ask…

Iren jumped and grabbed his hand. The knife had cut deep into his flesh. He caught a glimpse of tendon and bone. Blood gushed through his fingers. Iren never had a problem with blood unless it was his own. Then memories of almost dying as his lifeblood poured from around the knife sticking out of his leg, and he who would not be remembered, laughing, would drown Iren in terror. Gray spots danced in front of him and fear took a hold of him.

“Master Aetius.” Iren turned toward the chief.

The tall man looked down his nose at Iren. “Get into the bathroom and find a bandage. You’re getting blood all over everything. We’ll have to throw those onions away.”

Iren ran into the bathroom to do as he was told and stopped in the middle of the room. The juices from the onions felt as if they were eating away his hand. The pain made his panic soar and he took a step toward the sink.

As if his feet had a mind of their own, Iren ran out of the bathroom and then down the short hall to his room. Alpha Macon was there talking to Kane. Iren turned to leave. He didn’t want to interrupt an important meeting.

“Iren, stop,” Kane commanded. “What happened?”

Iren turned back to see Kane swinging his legs out of the bed and standing.
